Coffee & tea

Coffee is the one product that has to breathe out without breathing in. For days after roasting, beans give off carbon dioxide; meanwhile any oxygen in the bag is flattening the flavour in it. So the pack needs a metallised or foil laminate to keep air, light and damp out, and a one-way valve to let the CO₂ go. Tea asks for the same barrier for the opposite reason: it leaks its aroma outward.

Pet food

Two very different jobs under one name. Wet food is sterilised inside the sealed pouch, so the laminate has to hold its seal all the way through the retort vessel and come out flat, not swollen. Dry food is fatty, heavy and opened every day for weeks. It asks for a film a kibble corner cannot split, a base that stands up when the bag is full, and a zipper that still clicks shut when it is nearly empty.

Pharma & supplements

Single-dose sachets and stick packs, for powders, granules, tablets and gels. Here the pack is part of the product rather than a wrapper around it. A dose has to be the same dose on the last day of its shelf life as on the day it was filled, which is why these structures are built on aluminium foil: light, oxygen and damp stop at it. The flat three-side seal prints like a page, so the dose, the batch and the warning all have room to be read. Work starts from your registration file, not from our catalogue. Sachets, travel sizes and refill pouches for creams, serums, shampoo and masks. In this category the pack is the advertisement. A buyer sees the print before reading a word, so the metallic ink, the matt varnish and the spot colour have to look the same on the last pouch as on the first. Under the print, the film has a second job: keep oils, actives and fragrance in, and air and light out.

Baby food

Purées and drinks in a spouted pouch that a child holds and a parent has to trust. The pouch is filled, sealed, and then cooked: steam under pressure, above boiling, with the food already inside. So the film has to leave the retort still sealed, still legible, and still easy to tear open one-handed at a playground. The barrier sits at the top of the range because nothing inside preserves the food, only the pouch. Cap size, spout bore and tamper evidence are chosen with the recipe, not after it: a cap is a choking question before it is a design one.

Snacks & confectionery

Speed and crispness. Most of this category is formed on the customer's own vertical line from a printed roll, so what leaves us is film rather than finished bags. That film has to run through a forming collar all day without wandering. Damp is the failure that shows up first: a snack goes soft long before it goes off.

Sauces & ready meals

Sauce is wet, oily, salty and usually acidic. It is the hardest thing a seal has to hold — and here the pouch is cooked with the sauce already inside it, in a retort vessel, above boiling point, after it has been sealed. Two questions decide the pack. Will the seal close through sauce that splashed into the seal line on a fast filling line? And will your customer open it the way you intended — tear notch, spout or corner?

Frozen food

Freezing does the preserving, so the film is not asked for much barrier. It is asked to stay tough when it is cold. A laminate that turns brittle in the freezer splits at the corner where the pack gets picked up. And the line that fills these packs is a wet one, so the seal has to hold through that too. Handling, not shelf life, is what writes the specification in this category.

Agriculture & dry goods

Rice, flour, seed and feed, sold by weight, stacked on a pallet and stored in a warm, damp climate. Damp is the whole problem: a bag that lets it in ruins a germination rate or turns the flour. The pack also has to carry the weight, stack without slipping and survive being dragged, which is a mechanical brief at least as much as a barrier one.
